Workflow vs. Project Management
What’s the difference?  When do you need which?  Why do you need both?

In today’s risk-sensitive environment, auditors are under increasing pressure to work more efficiently AND more effectively.  In general, workflow is great at improving efficiency and project management is best for ensuring effectiveness.

Workflow’s focus is tactical.  It’s designed to ensure that repetitive routines are performed more efficiently and consistently.  This includes:
• Routing documents to multiple people
• Elevating and signing off on issues and actions
• Creating and distributing standard reports

Project Management’s focus is strategic.  It enables auditors to plan and manage audit engagements, and incorporate the judgment and flexible decision-making that are part of every audit.  This includes:
• Creating and modifying plans and methodologies
• Managing engagements, resources and budgets
• Incorporating investigative reports and subjective decision-making
• Visualizing and tracking progress in real-time
